| Extended Description |
When we visited Sergio Paolini at Montepulciano recently, he was
particularly pleased. The Italian National Festival of regional food had
awarded him the 5 star Golden Grape award. This retired banker produced
his first commercial wine the Tre Vigne in 2004 and now seems destined to
produce sought after wines. Another Tuscan food and wine voice we take
note of is Cornucopia in Pienza. From their small shop they serve regional
food lovers across Italy with Tuscan specialities including wines. Their latest
newsletter devotes a whole page to Sergio’s wine under the headline “a star is
born: Luteraia” Sergio is an independent man. You will notice his wine is an
IGT and not a DOCG Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This is because he uses
the Prugnolo Grosso (the Brunello grape) variety of Sangiovese rather than
the traditional Prugnolo Gentile. This makes the wine stronger and dryer than
a typical Vino Nobile. It is aged in oak for 9 months, bottled and released
after 18 months .
